If a legacy IoT device will not join UniFi WiFi, test it on a separate 2.4 GHz IoT SSID with compatible security. If devices connect but run slowly, change the affected radio or speed limit instead. Use the matching case below.
Older IoT device cannot join the SSID
Open Settings → WiFi, create a dedicated SSID on the existing restricted IoT network, and select IoT under WiFi Optimization. Select 2.4 GHz for a 2.4 GHz-only device. Keep a password; use WPA2 when the device cannot support WPA3, while retaining the existing security on other SSIDs.
If advanced settings were copied from another SSID, open that SSID’s Advanced settings and return Minimum Data Rate Control to Auto. Disable Fast Roaming on this legacy SSID if the client does not support 802.11r. Rejoin the device and confirm it receives a lease and works. If it joins but receives no IP, use the VLAN/DHCP fixes.
Ubiquiti documents these compatibility cases in Unable to Connect to WiFi.
WiFi connects but is slow on a congested radio
In Radios → AirView, inspect the affected AP’s channel use and retries. If nearby APs overlap, choose non-overlapping channels or run Settings → WiFi → Channel AI where available. Radio changes briefly disconnect clients.
For one AP, open UniFi Devices → AP → Settings → Channel Width. Use 20 MHz on crowded 2.4 GHz. On a congested 5 GHz radio, trial 40 MHz instead of 80 MHz and repeat a transfer to the same wired local server. Keep the change only if it improves the failing service.
For a nearby client on a clean 5 GHz channel, 80 MHz can improve throughput. This is a different case from congestion. Ubiquiti’s troubleshooting guide shows the radio measurements.
Throughput stops at a configured limit
Open Settings → WiFi → SSID → Advanced → WiFi Speed Limit. Correct or remove an unintended limit for that SSID. If the AP’s Ethernet uplink reports FE/100 Mbps, use the 100 Mbps uplink fix; a WiFi width change will not raise that wired link rate.
A client sees the SSID but drops at the coverage edge
Open the affected device in Clients and read signal strength and AP/client signal balance. If the AP cannot hear the client reliably, move or add an AP to cover that location. Increasing AP transmit power does not increase the client’s transmit power.
After the change, repeat the failing call or transfer along the same path. For a supported mobile client roaming between overlapping APs, use the SSID’s BSS Transition and Fast Roaming options; keep the separate legacy SSID’s compatibility settings.
